Zelton Conner

Zelton Woodrow Conner, age 92, passed away April 16, 2008 at Lifecare Center of Hilliard, Florida. He was born on April 27, 1915 to James John “Newt” Conner and Mattie Hodges Conner in Callahan, Florida. He is preceded in death by his wife, Maudria Johnson Conner, of 69 years, nine brothers and one sister. Mr. Conner was a radio operator during World War II in the Pacific. He was co-owner of the Conner Company in Folkston, Georgia with his brother, JJ Conner until 1982. Mr. Conner was a member of the first Charlton County Memorial Hospital Authority Board, the Rationing Board for Charlton County, City of Folkston Councilman for two terms and Mayor Pro-Tem for one term. Mr. Conner was a member of the Folkston VFW, Masonic Lodge # 196 of Folkston, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner in the Morocco Temple of Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Conner was a member of the Folkston First United Methodist Church and a longtime Sunday School teacher.
Mr. Conner was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to all that knew him. He loved Charlton County, his Country and his family with pride. He had a strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ that carried him through his many years of illness. He will be missed by all, but as he would have told everyone that knew him “And This Too Shall Pass.”
He is survived by two daughters, Melodie (John) Boatwright of Folkston, Georgia; Phyllis Free of Atlanta, Georgia; one grandson, Paul John Boatwright of Valdosta, Georgia; a special friend, Maurice Hannaford of Folkston, Georgia and many special caregivers from Hospice of NE Florida and Life Care Center of Hilliard, Florida.
Visitation will be Friday, April 18, 2008 from 6-8 PM at Shepard Funeral Home in Folkston, Georgia. Graveside services will be Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 10:00 AM in Pineview Cemetery with Rev. David Unkles and Dr. Norman Sweeting officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Men's Bible Class of Folkston United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of NE Florida, 4114 Sunbeam Road, Ste. 101, Jacksonville, Florida, 32257 of the Gideons International, 309 W. Main Street, Folkston, Georgia, 31537.
