Verena Monroe Gowen, 101 passed away June 13, 2014 in Life Care Center Hilliard, Florida. She was born August 16, 1912 to Hugh T. and Mattie Williamson Monroe in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. She was employed at J.C. Penney in Waycross as a Sales Associate, Okefenokee Swamp Concession, The Welcome Center, Johnson Brothers Hardware, W.C. Odom Co. and also Gowen Enterprise. She loved her family, friends, flowers and gardening. She was a member of the Folkston United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: her two sons: Jimmie Gowen (Ann) ; Sidney Gowen(Gloria), all of Folkston; Six Grandchildren: Dena Crews(Mike) , Hunter Gowen, both of Folkston; Amy Conner (Gannon) of Hilliard; Lee Gowen(Molly), Rena Potter(Jason), both of Folkston, Dean Gowen(Bonnie) of Swainsboro, Ga.; fourteen Great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband: James Dean Gowen, Sr.; six siblings, the last two of which lived to be 98 and 99 years of age.
Graveside services will be Monday, June 16, 2014 at 11:00 AM in Prospect Cemetery with Rev. Jack Varnell officiating. The family request in lieu of flowers donations be made to Folkston United Methodist Church, 106 S. Third Street, Folkston, Georgia 31537.
