Phyllis Anne Carter McLendon of Traders Hill in Folkston passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2013, following complications resulting from her courageous battle with cancer. A native of Charlton County, Folkston, and formerly of Waycross and Richmond Hill, she was the eldest daughter of Clarence Warren Carter and Gladys Clark Carter of Folkston, and a direct descendant of Okefenokee Swamp pioneers Jacob C. and Sinie Hurst Carter. A respected and knowledgeable genealogist of Wiregrass Georgia families, she was a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy. A 1963 alumnus of Folkston High School, she attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Tifton, Ga., from 1963-1965. A beloved wife, sister, and mother, she was a member of First Baptist Church, Folkston. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Emory LaDon McLendon, of Folkston; four children: Sherri McLendon (Scott Parker), Weaverville, N.C.; Sabrina McLendon Abare (Bill Abare), Saint Augustine, Fla.; Warren McLendon, Darien, and Clarence McLendon (Cristina Hendrix), Brunswick; by three grandchildren: Will Abare, Mason Abare, and Riley Parker; by four sisters: Sue Stewart, Folkston; Kay Carter, Folkston; Grace Carter, St. Augustine, Fla.; and Kathy Adkins, Folkston; by an uncle and aunt, LaVerne and Christine Clark, Folkston; and by numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. She was an avid reader and seamstress, and also enjoyed making crafts. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 13 at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Folkston with Boyd Evans (her nephew) officiating. Burial will follow at old Sardis Church Cemetery, Uptonville. The family will receive friends and family Thursday, September 12, 6 – 8 p.m., at Shepard Funeral Home, Folkston. Shepard Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
