Gene Norris Johnson, 77, passed away Thursday, January 17, 2013, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Folkston, GA, and was born to the late Erich Harry Johnson, Sr. and Emily Haddock Johnson on August 30, 1935. He received an A.S. degree from South Georgia College and was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
He worked with his uncle, mother, and brother in the family business, Johnson Bros. Hardware, and became owner/sole proprietor in 1972. He and his wife continued to operate the business until only a few years ago. He was a member and past Master of Folkston Masonic Lodge No. 196 F. & A.M. and was an active member of the Folkston Lions Club. He was a Director Emeritus of Southeastern Bank.
Norris was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a lifetime member of Jacksonville Gun Club. He also enjoyed gardening and recently became a commercial blueberry grower.
He was proud of his four grandchildren and delighted in showing them off, particularly at the Richcliff / Okefenokee Restaurant community table. During his battle with cancer, he never complained and was always hopeful.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 49 years, Martha Elizabeth “Betty” Monk Johnson; two daughters, Daryn Johnson Sasser and her husband Robb of Florence, SC and Danice Johnson Foley and her husband Mason of Kennesaw, GA; a son, Clinton Norris Johnson and his wife Brandi of Douglas, GA; four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Scott Sasser of Florence, SC, and Gracie Ann and Judd Johnson of Douglas, GA; a brother, Erich Harry Johnson, Jr. and his wife Doris of Folkston; one niece, five nephews and numerous other relatives.
Visitation will be held Saturday, January 19, from 4 to 6 PM at Shepard Funeral Home in Folkston. Services will be held Sunday, January 20, 2 PM, at Folkston United Methodist Church. Internment will immediately follow at Pineview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Folkston United Methodist Church Building Fund.
