Myrtle Walker

September 4, 1914 — July 30, 2010

Myrtle Batten Walker, 95 , died Friday, July 30th ,at the home of her daughter in Folkston, Georgia after a long and meaningful life.

She was born September 4, 1914 in Moniac, Florida and lived most of her life in Hilliard, Florida. Widowed at a young age with 2 daughters, she married John Ernest Walker and adopted his special needs son John Ernest Walker, Jr.(lovingly called "Johnny").

Despite the difficulties and struggles of her younger life, she will always be remembered as a hard working business woman, loving mother, grandmother, and a beautiful woman.

Always ready with her sharp wit she kept us laughing. We lovingly called her “Myrtle the Turtle". Her greatest gift to us was her loving care of Johnny and her resolve to make him part of our family. We learned some very important values as we watched the love and care showered on him throughout his life.

Myrtle was the daughter of John Andrew and Daisy Clark Batten. She was preceded in death by her first husband Dewey Stokes, her second husband John Ernest Walker, Sr., two daughters, Thelma Stokes Conner and Wilma Stokes, her son John Ernest Walker, Jr.("Johnny”), and her son-in-law Roy A. Taylor.

Survivors include her daughter Doris Stokes Taylor, her son-in-law Dewitt Conner, Brother Jack Batten(wife Verdie) and her grandchildren: Twain Conner (wife Shirley), Delores Taylor Gibson (husband Doug), Rick Taylor (wife Connie), June Taylor Pounds (husband John), and Ronnie Conner (wife Janice). She is also survived by eight great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and a loving caregiver and friend, Betsy Lindsay.

The family will receive friends Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Live Oak Baptist Church from 5 until 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Satilla, (earmarked for Hospice House, 808 Evergreen Way, Waycross, Ga. 31501) or the charity of your choice.

A celebration of her life will be held at her church, Live Oak Baptist Church in Callahan Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 10:00 AM with Pastor Steve Wolgamott officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery.
