Merle Clark Gowen, 93, of St. Simons Island, formerly of Folkston, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 26. Merle, or G-Ma as she was called by most people who knew her, was born on March 25, 1922 to Harvey Furman Clark and Viola Louise Boring. She is survived by five children, Randall Woodrow Gowen, Sr. (Frances), James Furman Gowen (Faye), Donna Gowen Brock, Gayle Gowen Redding (Jim), and Lynne Gowen Killian (Bob); her brothers, Ralph Clark, Billy Clark, and Russell Clark;
She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and thirty-one great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Merle was predeceased by her parents, her brother Hudson Clark, a great grandchild Hudson Clark McQuigg, and her beloved husband of 52 years, Randall Woodrow Gowen, Sr.
Merle was known for her homemade candies and jellies and the hundreds of baby blankets that she donated to CareNet. She contributed to many other charitable organizations and was a long time member of the Folkston United Methodist Church where she was the treasurer of the Susie Fleming Sunday School class for many years. Since moving to St. Simons Island, Merle faithfully attended Sunday school and church at St. Simons United Methodist Church where she was active in Saints and Sinners and her church circle. While in Folkston, she was an active member of the Folkston Garden Club, the Senior Center and was president of the local AARP.
Funeral services will be held Monday June 29 at 11:00 AM at the Folkston United Methodist Church with Rev. Benji Varnell, Rev. Marsha Cochran and Rev. Jack Varnell officiating. Burial will be in Pineview Cemetery.
