Melrose Thompson Sikes; 88
Her Faith became sight Friday evening when, surrounded by her family at her home, she was ushered into heaven to see her Savior and her loved ones who had gone before.
Miss Melrose was born in Chiggerhill, Alabama on Sand Mountain to Josie Kelly Thompson and Harlen L. Thompson on October 28, 1920. She grew up on Sand Mountain, Alabama and graduated from Crossville High School Class of 1939 and attended church all of her life.
She was the Granddaughter of William Parker Kelly, known all over Sand Mountain as the "walking preacher". Named after him as Willie Melrose, she omitted the Willie later in life.
She moved to Florida in 1940 and married Johnnie Rosier Sikes on March 30,1940 and their marriage lasted 54 years. Living in the Carroll's Corner since 1950, they raised 3 children. Joe Harlen, George Elbert, and Rosemary.
They had a family business named Sikes Farm where they had layer chickens for 12 years and also hydroponic tomatoes.
Miss Melrose and her family were very active in church life for several years. She served as Sunday School teacher, WMU leader, and a deacon's wife till her failing health prevented her from attending her home church, River Road Baptist Church were she and her family were some of the founding members. Spreading the Gospel thru Missions was always her focus.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Johnnie, her daughter Rosemary, brothers Ulay J and H. L. Thompson, and several in laws.
She is survived by her sons; Joe and his wife Joyce, and George. And her honorary son Gene Stroble. Her sisters Clara Kilgore and Sara Greer.
Grandchildren Sherri Harris and her husband Clay; Christina Bates and her husband John and John Colson Sikes and his mother Mikele Havens.
Great-Grandchildren Christopher Harris and his fiancee' Michele; Alexander Harris, Elizabeth Cherico, Johnathon, Sydney, and Christian Bates.
Great-Great Grandchildren Justin and Jacqueline Harris. Several Nieces and Nephews.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec 9 from 4-7pm at River Road Baptist Church. A celebration service will be Wednesday morning at 11:00 am. River Road Baptist Church, and Interment will follow the service at the Church cemetery.
