Laurice Isabel Jackson, 97, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 14, at Generations of Irmo assisted living facility. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 18, 2014, at Folkston United Methodist Church, Folkston, Ga., with burial following in Pineview Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Generations of Irmo.
The last surviving of eight children, Mrs. Jackson was born on Sept. 22, 1917, in Eudora, Miss., to William Arthur and Georgia Helen Earnheart. After her mother died when she was 11, she helped take care of her younger siblings and also worked in her father’s general store.
She attended Senatobia Junior College in Mississippi. In a time and place when options for young women were limited, she chose to go by train to California in 1938 to marry her love, Sidney Lee Jackson of Hickman, Ky. Mr. Jackson worked in the mining industry, and they lived in California, Oregon, Florida and Georgia over the course of their 45-year marriage. She moved to Columbia in 2002, where she lived at Deepwood Estates retirement community for many years before moving to assisted living.
Mrs. Jackson was a homemaker, gardener, community volunteer, avid bridge player and active member of Folkston United Methodist Church. She was a loyal and generous friend, known for her stories and laughter. She was always certain that it was her grandchildren who hung the moon.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1983 and her elder son, Capt. Sidney Lee Jackson Jr., U.S. Air Force retired, in 2011.
Survivors include one son, Charles Grant Jackson and his wife, Licia Drinnon Jackson of Columbia, S.C.; three grandsons, Grant N. Jackson (Jennifer) of Columbia, S.C., Jonathan L. Jackson (Brandon Martin) of Jersey City, N.J., Rett M. Jackson of Columbia, S.C.; one granddaughter, Hilary Jackson Stone (Isaac) of Columbia, S.C.; two great-granddaughters, Ava and Leila Jackson of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter-in-law, Lojois K. Jackson of Alpharetta, Ga.; a brother-in-law, John A. Brenner of Parkin, Ark.; and many much-loved nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Folkston United Methodist Church, 1463 Third St., Folkston, GA 31537. Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia, S.C. and Shepard Funeral Home in Folkston, Ga., are handling arrangements.
