Sgt. Jonathan Wayne “Joey” Chancy, Sr., 45, of St. George, GA passed away September 2 at his residence. He was born in Jacksonville Beach, FL May 26, 1969. He was a member of the United States Navy. He was the Boy Scout Troop Master in St. George for the past 15 years, where he led 8 young men to the Rank of Eagle Scout. He served as a Lt. in the Clay Hill Fire Department in Clay County. He served in many positions in the Charlton County Volunteer Fire Department of the last 25 years. He has faithfully served Charlton County as a member of the Charlton County Sheriff’s Office for the last 23 years. He served as a member of the Charlton County Board of Education. Recently he joined the congregation of Sand Hill Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his mother: Patricia Charlene Goodenough Chancy and a sister: Kathy Chancy.
He is survived by his children: Jonathan W. Chancy, Jr. & Amy Elisabeth Chancy; his Father: Julius Chancy; his Brother: Robert Chancy and a step-sister: Debbie Rhodes.
The family will receive friends Friday, September 5 at Shepard Funeral Home beginning at 5:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 6 at 11:00 AM at the Charlton County High School Gymnasium. Rev. Trent Long, Rev. Ray McMillan and Rev. Ray McKendree will be officiating. Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery.
