J.O. Hannaford, Jr., a lifelong resident of Folkston, Georgia, died at home on September 11, 2023 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Folkston, Georgia on July 30, 1928 to James Oscar Hannaford, Sr. and Thelma Gowen Hannaford. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Jackie Fillingim Hannaford; a daughter, Jeanne Crews (Don); grandsons Greg Crews and Geoff (Jenna) Crews; great-grandchildren Amelia Crews and Gage Moore; sister-in-law, Linda Hannaford; and several nieces, a nephew and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
J.O. was pre-deceased by his parents; a son, James Michael Hannaford and his wife, Barbara Hannaford; a daughter-in-law, Lori Thompson Crews (Greg); brothers Maurice Hannaford (Linda) and George Leonard Hannaford and his wife Ellen; and sister Meryl Lloyd and her husband Glynn.
J.O. served as a weatherman in the Army Air Corps/Air Force. He loved his community and as a younger adult served in many ways. He was a deacon at First Baptist Church of Folkston, a member of Folkston A & M Lodge 196, a firefighter on the Folkston Volunteer Fire Department, the board of the Folkston-Charlton County Chamber of Commerce and Development Authority, and on the board of the Folkston Housing Authority. He worked as a life insurance agent for Gulf Life before opening his insurance and real estate business in Folkston, serving alongside his wife in that capacity for over forty years.
He loved fishing, in the surrounding rivers, at the jetties and in the deep water. He also loved traveling with his wife and family.
Memorialization will be by cremation. Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations in honor of J.O. can be made to First Baptist Church of Folkston, or the charity of your choice.
