Donald Eugene (Gene) Mott, 73 of Hilliard passed away December 13, 2009 in Shands Jacksonville.
Gene was born June 30, 1936 in Graingeville, Idaho to Earl and Rose Marie Ayers Mott. He grew up in the Idaho mountains, where he, his older brothers and his dad, worked delivering Mail by an old International Truck in the summer and horseback later in the year. In Winter, they delivered by horse and sleigh. When the snow got too deep for the horses, they fitted them in snow shoes. Pictures of the horses wearing snow shoes, designed by his family are still viewable in museums in the Dakotas.
Gene's passion for horses continued as he worked as a packer taking supplies by mule up the mountains to people in the Salmon River area. He helped start ranches, braking horses and riding bronx. He took men hunting and served as a guide and cook. He served his country in the United States Army. He learned to operate heavy equipment, welding and later drove big trucks. His failing health brought him to Florida, which afforded the opportunity to be closer to his grandchildren and family. He was a very proud man who loved his family and friends. He lived a very colorful life and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
