Cynthia Vernelle Carter Shuman, 83, of Folkston, Georgia went to be with the Lord on April 24, 2011. Her death follows a lengthy illness brought on by Alzheimer’s disease. Vernelle was the daughter of Jakie and Mamie Carter of Brantley County, Georgia, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Shuman, brother, Nelma Carter, and granddaughter, Cynthia Harrison.
Vernelle was employed in the retail sales business for many years and completed her employment in the banking industry holding several positions at local and area banks. She was an outstanding seamstress, owning a fabric store and preparing many creations for a number of customers in the Folkston area. She was a talented cake decorator and made beautiful and delicious wedding cakes for friends.
Vernelle was very active in Grace Chapel Baptist Church for approximately fifty-five years up until the time she had to be moved to an assisted living facility in Brunswick, Georgia. She sang in the church choir, performed secretarial duties and was always willing to help with dinners, quilting and other projects taken on by the church ladies. She made costumes for pageants, curtains for the social hall as well as several table cloths to be used for church socials and events.
Vernelle is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Kay Shuman of Douglasville, Georgia and Bill and Nancy Shuman of Brunswick, Georgia, and a sister and husband, Wyvonne and Franklin Geiger of Hilliard, Florida. She is also survived by the following grandchildren and spouses, Beth and Glenn Thompson of Brunswick, Georgia, Jennifer and Matt Hendrix of Jupiter, Florida, Andrea and Keith Wheeler of Mandarin, Florida, Tina and Michael Prater of Dallas, Georgia, and Robert and Cheryl Shuman of Douglasville, Georgia. She is also survived by seventeen great-grandchildren, several nephews and numerous cousins as well as her long time friend and companion, Leo Miller of Homeland, Georgia.
Active pall bearers were Danny Geiger, Matt Hendrix, Mike Prater, Robert Shuman, Glenn Thompson, and Keith Wheeler.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to Community Hospice Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32257.
Funeral services will be held at Shepard Funeral Home in Folkston, Georgia on April 27, 2011 at 11:00 am. The family will greet visitors at 10:00 am at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will be in Pineview Cemetery in Folkston immediately following the service. Reverend Richard Soper of Brunswick, Georgia will officiate the service.
