Charles Augustus Herrin, 76, of Hilliard, FL, passed away following a long illness on November 16, 2016 at home.
Charles was born in Charlton County, GA to Ben and Virgie Herrin on September 5, 1940. He married Joann Thrift on April 15, 1960. They were married in Riverside Chapel in Nahunta. Moving to Jacksonville in the late 1950s, Mr. Herrin eventually began a successful career as a commercial shrimper. Due to a rare skin cancer, sun exposure was recommended and shrimping provided a way to be in the sun and provide a living for his family. Upon retiring from the shrimping industry, Mr. Herrin had built a total of 3 shrimp boats by hand, the final and largest named, after the love of his life, Miss Joann.
Charles enjoyed the outdoors, was an avid hunter, and had a passion for music. A favorite pastime of his was to sit around and play music with his son and grandsons. A family gathering was never complete without all of them breaking out the guitars and mandolin. His love for music has a lasting legacy that now transcends 4 generations. Nothing brought him greater joy than being surrounded by his family.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Joann; his children: Andy (Katrina) Herrin, Karen (Mickey) Henderson; his grandchildren: Adam (Stephanie) Henderson, Brian (Kristin) Henderson, Colton Herrin, Kyler (Reba) Herrin; and 4 great-grandchildren: Ava and Liam Henderson, Malcom Herrin, and Ansley Henderson. Charles is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: A.J., Thomas (Shorty), and Donald; and two sisters: Faye and Margie.
