Alton Carter

Alton John Baptist Carter, 91, of Folkston, passed away Tuesday October 7 at the VA Medical Center in Lake City, FL. He was a native and life long resident of Charlton County. His parents were the late John and Emma Dyal Carter. Mr. Carter served as a Charlton County Commissioner for 24 years and as Sheriff for 3 years and was the Chairman of the Charlton County Democratic Party. He was a farmer and in the Turpentine Business for many years. He was preceded in death by his daughter: Althea Starling; a Grandson: Ben Kitchings; and 2-Granddaughters: Annsley Carter and Natasha Dressel.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years: Lorene Crews Carter of Folkston; 2-Daughters: Ethelleene (Lamar) Kitchings of Folkston, and Marjorie (Jake) Crews of Alma, GA; 4-Sons: Buddy (Faye) Carter of Waycross, GA, Jackie Carter, Tommy (Sheila) Carter and Timmy (Vicki) Carter all of Folkston; and a Sister: Margaret Purvis of Jacksonville, FL; 15-Grandchildren and 18-Great Grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday October 9 at Mr. Carter's residence at Rt. 3 Box 795 Carter Community Road in the Racepond Community of Charlton County beginning at 4:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Friday October 10 at Sand Hill Baptist Church at 11:00 AM with Rev. Ion Johns, Rev. Reggie Herrin officiating. Burial will follow in Racepond Cemetery at Sand Hill Baptist Church with Military Honors. Pallbearers will be Arliss Carter, Quinton Carter, Zachary Carter, Shannon Carter, Joseph Kitchings, and Jason Crews.
