Alice Marie Williams Carter, 78, of Folkston, Georgia passed away March 18, 2014 in Jacksonville, Florida. She was born in Sardis, Georgia to the late Fred Williams and Eva Downing Pitts Williams. She moved to Folkston in 1957. She received her Associates Degree from Armstrong College in Savannah, her Bachelor’s Degree from Georgia Teacher’s College (now Georgia Southern), and her Master’s Degree from the University of Georgia. She started her teaching career in Charlton County in the 4-H office with Mr. Hoyt DeLoach. She was a beloved teacher in the Charlton County School System for 33 years before her retirement in 1994. Mrs. Carter served her community on the Charlton County Board of Education.
She loved gardening and cooking. She taught the Jewel Gibson Sunday School Class and was a member of the Red Hat Society where she was named Queen Honey Suckle Rose.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Edmond Carter; her sisters: Jewel Harmon and Marilyn Hall; and a special niece that she raised: Carolyn Matthews Phillips.
She is survived by Carolyn’s husband: George Phillips of Americus, GA; Carolyn’s adult children who were known as her grandchildren: Matt Phillips of Americus, GA and Eva Phillips McLean (Tim) of Leesburg, GA; and her “Great Grandkids”: Brennan and Carolyne McLean; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is also survived by her beloved dog and constant companion: June Boy.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, March 20 at the First Baptist Church of Folkston at 11:00 AM with Dr. Randy Jacoby and Rev. Gene McCullough officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the church. Burial will follow in Racepond Cemetery at Sand Hill Baptist Church.
